We initiated the unit of inquiry – ‘Living Things’ by
taking our students on a Nature Walk.
In our homerooms we unpacked the word ‘Nature’ and students brainstormed and listed down the things they could collect on a
nature walk. We, then made a mind map of things that they would need in order
to collect these objects like – baskets, spade, magnifying glasses, spoons, jar
etc
Our little ones were enthusiastic and took on the role of scientists and set off on their
nature walk. They observed the surroundings
and collected various objects.
Once, back in their homerooms they recorded this data by using a checklist
and adding some new things that they had collected. To enhance their critical thinking skills we had a
brainstorming session that led to various connections
related to nature.
Students applied their thinking skills and satisfied their curiosity as they made these connections.
A nature walk is
a great way to enhance children’s appreciation
of the natural environment and also develops their vocabulary as well as research
skills.
